Giant Hands in East Village is a site specific installation created on site at 172 E 4th street.
In the spring of 2019, I was invited by Chashama, an arts organization in New York City, to create an installation in the vacant space of a former bank in the East Village.
Chashama liked my gorilla-style installations with giant hands in Central Park. I already had 12 giant hands and decided to make 24 more for a set of 36. Because I was still working as a teacher during the day I spent the night in the space making giant hands.
The space was open towards the street and the windows had graffiti. I wanted to include the inside into the outside. I also hung a single giant hand into the entrance hallway as a welcoming hand.
These 36 giant hands, initially simple outlines, were subsequently painted gradually over many months and hung in many installations in Central Park.
